Earth Hour is an environmental initiative which started in Australia in 2007 that has now become a global movement. For 60 minutes, people around the world SWITCH OFF their lights not only as a symbolic action but also a contribution for a more sustainable environment. This year, Earth Hour also asks us to SWITCH ON to clean and renewable energy.
ANU consistently runs the best Earth Hour events as acknowledged by Earth Hour Australia. ANU is serious about its contributions to environmental management and sustainability. The university has courses focusing on environment and climate change. Waste management is emphasized and being implemented everywhere–from dormitories to offices. Last night, I briefly attended the Earth Hour event here on campus. At 8:30, lights were switched off (though not all due to security reasons, I heard), traditional performances and the fire show started.
